Church celebration sparks UFO sighting in Ballantyne?

By Chris Dyches - email & LaToya Boyce - email

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -  Hundreds of people in south Charlotte saw what appeared to be strange lights floating in the air around the Ballantyne area, sparking many to believe they were seeing aliens or UFOs.

Callers bombarded the WBTV phone lines Friday night to report the strange lights. Several people claimed to see a cluster of 20 to 30 yellow/orange lights.

"The lights moved in an extravagant way, not a way you'd expect a normal aircraft to move," wrote witness Michael Brennan. "The lights frequently vanished, and re-appeared many times then disappeared."

Hoping for an explanation, we made a call to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Friday night.  Duty Captain John Williams said he had no knowledge of any UFOs in Ballantyne Friday night or anywhere else in Charlotte.

More than two dozen cats rescued from fire

SOUTH CHARLOTTE - Crews rescued at least 25 cats from a fire in South Charlotte Sunday morning.

Fire crews responded to 11716 Carmel Lakes Drive just after 10 to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence.

Officials say the fire started in the kitchen and then spread to the garage. It appears food on the stove sparked the flames.

Debbie Smith, the renter of the home, tried to use an extinguisher to put out the fire but it didn't work.

"I tried to get back in and try to do something. I had a cat in a carrier in there, I was fixing to take to my mom's. And I singed all my hair," Smith said. "It was just too big all of a sudden."
