Some unions to skip 2012 Democratic convention in Charlotte

WASHINGTON (AP) - More than a dozen trade unions are planning to sit out the 2012 Democratic convention because they are angry it will be held in a right-to-work state.

The unions say they are disappointed that labor wasn't consulted before Democrats settled on North Carolina, a state that is considered one of the least union-friendly in the nation.

They are also frustrated that job creation hasn't been a higher priority for Democratic lawmakers. The unions include the Laborers, Painters and Electrical Workers.

The move would deprive the party of millions of dollars spent on sky boxes and other sponsorships that usually help underwrite the convention.

A Democratic National Committee spokeswoman says the party is happy with the support of local labor leaders in North Carolina.

Walgreens project under way at Johnston, Hwy. 51

BALLANTYNE (Mike Parks, The South Charlotte Weekly) - Work is under way on a corner lot in south Charlotte that will soon be home to the area’s next pharmacy.

Heavy machinery is currently clearing land at the corner of Johnston Road and Hwy. 51/Pineville-Matthews Road in south Charlotte for what eventually will be a Walgreens. The land, formerly owned by Allen Tate Jr., did house a vacant office building but has since been mostly cleared as crews prepare the spot for construction.

Morgan Property Group, which bought the land for $2.1 million, will start construction soon on what will be a 12,500 square foot building with a drive-through service window on the 1.3-acre lot. They cleared the lot last week, and will start doing some site work over the next few weeks.
