CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Several families had to be evacuated from a south Charlotte town home complex after firefighters were called in to battle a two-alarm fire.
Flames broke out at a home on Duke Lancaster Drive, which is located in the Kingsley subdivision in Ballantyne shortly before 7 p.m. Friday.
The fire caused $500,000 in damages. It destroyed two town homes, damaged one and affected three additional units. Multiple families were displaced.
Saturday, fire investigators said the fire was sparked by someone carelessly discarding smoking materials on a back deck.
It took 45 firefighters more than an hour to get the fire under control.
A total of five families were displaced, and getting assistance from the Red Cross.
Witnesses told WBTV News they heard an explosion and then smelled smoke and saw the flames.
Firefighters said that if not for neighbors who knocked on doors and warned others of the fire that someone could have been hurt.
